Istanbul - They Might Be Giants - lyrics

Image
The success of Mohammedanism in Africa and the East had been due to its offering the opportunity it afforded of freedom to the slave and debtor, and an extreme simplicity which pleased  the unintelligent masses who were perplexed by the mysteries of Catholicism. During the early years of Islam society had fallen, much as our society has today, into a tangle wherein the bulk of men were disappointed and angry and seeking for a solution to the whole group of social strains. There was indebtedness everywhere; the power of money and consequent usury. There was slavery everywhere. To all this Islam came as a vast relief and a solution of strain. The slave who admitted that Mohammed was the prophet of God and that the new teaching had, therefore, divine authority, ceased to be a slave. The slave who adopted Islam was henceforward free. The debtor who "accepted" was rid of his debts. Usury was forbidden. The small farmer was relieved not only of his debts but of his crushing taxat...

Christians must not to be 'sourpusses' or like people coming back from a funeral

Pope Francis wants all of us to become heralds of the joy of the Gospel. In Evangelii Gaudium he cautions us not to be 'sourpusses' or like people coming back from a funeral. He insists: 'Let us not allow ourselves to be 'robbed of hope' (EG 83). There is a definite temptation nowadays to rob the Church of hope. We often hear people speaking about the decline in Church practice, or the lack of vocations to the priesthood and religious life as signals that Europe has 'lost the faith'. It is true that many people in Europe have drifted away from regular Church practice: there is an increasing loss of the 'sense of the sacred', and more and more people seem to be growing used to living their lives with little or no reference to belief and trust in God. Pope Francis tells us that it is now, more than ever, that the world needs to hear the song of the Lord, 'the joy of the Gospel'. He challenges us to get out there and to bring faith to life. ...

Empress. Saint Helena was an innkeeper's daughter

AddThis Social Bookmarking Sharing Button Widget Empress. Saint Helena was an innkeeper's daughter born at Drepanum (later Helenopolis) in Asia Minor, around 270. In about 312, when she was over 60, St Helena became a Christian. She was very devout, dressed quietly, and gave generously to the poor and prisoners. She made a lengthy pilgrimage to the Holy Land where she spent large sums for the relief of the poor and sick and founded churches on the sacred sites. Ambrose, and the 9th century poet Cynewulf, wrote that Saint Helena won renown because she was the mother of the first Christian Emperor and because she is said to ha...
