Bl. Magdalena Roman Catholic Martyr of Nagasaki, Japan. Magdalene turned herself into the authorities and declared herself a follower of Jesus Christ. At age 23, she died on October 16, 1634 after thirteen days of torture, suffocated to death and suspended upside down in a pit of offal on a gibbet (??? tsurushi, "reverse hanging"). Saint Nicholas Owen - Independent Catholic News : Jesuit lay-brother, martyr. There is no record of his family, birthplace, date of birth, or baptism. Nicholas had been a servant of the Society of Jesus and joined the order around 1580. At the execution of St Edmund Campion he openly declared him innocent and was imprisoned. After his release he served the priests Henry Garnett and John Gerard for eighteen years. He was captured again with with Fr John, escaped from the Tower, and helped the escape of Father Gerard.

He had planned to arrange a marriage for her, but she decided to become a nun instead. After training under St Cognat at Arnaide in Donegal she founded a convent at Clonbrony in Co Longford. Samthan is named in the litany and the canon of the ancient Stowe Missal.
