STS. JOHN AND FESTO, MARTYRS ON THE VIA SALARIA ANTICA

Bl. Joseph Yuen, Roman Catholic Priest and Martyr of Tonkin, Vietnam. A native priest, he was imprisoned, then strangled. Feastday June 24

BIRTH OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST- St. John the Baptist, Herod Antipas, Tetrarch of Perea and Galilee, had him arrested and imprisoned at Machaerus Fortress on the Dead Sea when John denounced his adultrous and incestuous marriage with Herodias, wife of his half brother Philip. John was beheaded at the request of Salome, daughter of Herodias,John is presented in the New Testament as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the precursor of the Messiah.

St. Bartholomew of Fame, 1193 A.D. A Benedictine hermit and miracle worker associated with Durham, England. He was born in Whitby, in Northumbria, England, and was called Tostig. After going to Norway, Bartholomew was ordained and returned to Durham, where he entered the Benedictine Order. He became a hermit on the island of Fame, on the coast of Northumbria, remaining there for forty-two years. Bartholomew was noted as a miracle worker.

St. Germoc, 6th century. Confessor of the faith, an Irish chieftain. He was the brother of St. Breaca. Germoc settled in Cornwall, England.

St. Mother Maria Guadalupe Garcia Zavala ~ Mother Lupita, she co-founded a new Congregation, which they began on 13 October 1901. It was known as the "Handmaids of St Margaret Mary (Alacoque) and the Poor". María worked as a nurse. Regardless of the poverty and lack of material goods of the patients, compassion and care for the physical and spiritual well-being of the sick were the primary concerns of their congregation. The Mexican Revolution started in 1911 and its effects lasted up-to 1936. during which the political-religious situation in Mexico became uneasy. The Catholic Church underwent persecution. Mother María put her own life at risk and hid the priests and the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Guadalajara in her hospital.

St. Kunegunda. (1224-1292) Daughter of King Bela IV and niece of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, she married King Boleslaus V of Poland at sixteen. On his death in 1279 she became a Poor Clare at the Convent of Sandeck, which she had founded. She also built churches and hospitals, ransomed Christians captured by the Turks, and served the poor and ill. She is also known as St. Kinga. Her cult was confirmed in 1690.
