ST. PHILIP NERI, PRIEST, FOUNDER OF THE CONGREGATION OF THE ORATORY-Philip was born in Florence but reborn, for the Romans, in the squares and alleys of the Eternal City, the most run-down of them, in and through which a holy shepherd acquired the “smell of the sheep” - sheep, who had the stench of poverty, which empties both the pockets and the soul.
ST. ELEUTERUS, POPE
St. Becan, 6th century. Irish hermit in Cork. Becan lived in the time of St. Columba and was known for his sanctity.
St. Dyfan. Missionary to the Britons. He was sent by Pope St. Eleutherius when a local Briton king requested missionaries from the pope. Dyfan is remembered with a church at Merthyr-Dyfan, Britain. He is also called Deruvianus and Damian.
Sts. Fugatius and Damian, 2nd century. Reportedly missionaries sent by Pope St. Eleutherius to Britain. They are also listed as Phaganus and Diruvianus Fagan and Deruvian, or as Hager and Dyfan.
St. Oduvald, 695 A.D. Scottish abbot. A native of Scotland, he entered the monastic life and became abbot of Melrose, which was then a great spiritual center of the era.
