The Luther Decade will be upon us in 2017 - here is a clip from our film about Saint John Fisher, one of England's great figures who enlightened people about Martin Luther's heresies in Tudor England. Saint John Fisher was executed by order of King Henry VIII in 1535 for refusing to support the King's annulment of marriage and his break with the Universal Church which set England adrift for 500 years apart from the Church, England which had been a Catholic country for over a thousand years. Istanbul - They Might Be Giants - lyrics

The success of Mohammedanism in Africa and the East had been due to its offering the opportunity it afforded of freedom to the slave and debtor, and an extreme simplicity which pleased  the unintelligent masses who were perplexed by the mysteries of Catholicism. During the early years of Islam society had fallen, much as our society has today, into a tangle wherein the bulk of men were disappointed and angry and seeking for a solution to the whole group of social strains.
There was indebtedness everywhere; the power of money and consequent usury.
There was slavery everywhere. To all this Islam came as a vast relief and a solution of strain.
The slave who admitted that Mohammed was the prophet of God and that the new teaching had, therefore, divine authority, ceased to be a slave.
The slave who adopted Islam was henceforward free.
The debtor who "accepted" was rid of his debts.
Usury was forbidden.
The small farmer was relieved not only of his debts but of his crushing taxation.
Above all, justice could be had without buying it from lawyers

Christians must not to be 'sourpusses' or like people coming back from a funeral

Pope Francis wants all of us to become heralds of the joy of the Gospel. In Evangelii Gaudium he cautions us not to be 'sourpusses' or like people coming back from a funeral. He insists: 'Let us not allow ourselves to be 'robbed of hope' (EG 83).

There is a definite temptation nowadays to rob the Church of hope. We often hear people speaking about the decline in Church practice, or the lack of vocations to the priesthood and religious life as signals that Europe has 'lost the faith'. It is true that many people in Europe have drifted away from regular Church practice: there is an increasing loss of the 'sense of the sacred', and more and more people seem to be growing used to living their lives with little or no reference to belief and trust in God.

Pope Francis tells us that it is now, more than ever, that the world needs to hear the song of the Lord, 'the joy of the Gospel'. He challenges us to get out there and to bring faith to life. A Church which does not come out of herself to evangelise, he said, becomes self-referential and then gets sick.
In Evangelii Gaudium Pope Francis asks us to put everything we do into a new key - a 'missionary key'.

He wrote:
'I dream of a missionary option, that is, a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything, so that the Church's customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be suitably channelled for the evangelisation of today's world rather than for her self-preservation' (EG 27).

And again...

'Pastoral ministry in a missionary key seeks to abandon the complacent attitude that says: 'We have always done it this way'. It invites everyone to be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelisation in their respective communities' (EG 33).

November 9 is the Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. John on the Lateran Hill. Why is a feast for a church in Rome so important? Because, as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Rome, it is, therefore the cathedral church of the Pope, the Bishop of Rome. It is the first of the four “patriarchal basilicas” in Rome (the others being St. Paul’s Outside- the-Walls, St. Peter’s at the Vatican and St. Mary Major). Its official title is quite long: Archbasilica of the Most Holy Savior and Saints John the Baptist and the Evangelist at the Lateran.

Maurice, a commander, and Exuperius, Candidus, Innocent, Vitalis, two Victors, and the men of the legion refused to worship pagan deities, or possibly refused to massacre the local innocent populace. They were supposed to be pressured to obey by witnessing the beheading of some of their officers, but refused to offer sacrifices to the Roman gods. Reportedly, Maximian brought in another legion to slay the 6,600 Christians. A basilica, St. Maurice-en-Valais, was built from about 369-391 to commemorate this remarkable martyrdom. St. Valerian - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online

St. Valerian, Roman Catholic Priest and Martyr. The massacre of the martyrs of Lyons with their bishop, St. Pothinus, took place during the persecutions of Marcus Aurelius in the year 177. Marcellus, a priest, we are told, by Divine intervention, managed to escape to Chalon-sur-Saone, where he was given shelter. His host was a pagan, and seeing him offer incense before images of Mars, Mercury, and Minerva, Marcellus remonstrated with and converted him. While journeying toward the North, the priest fell in with the governor Priscus, who asked him to a celebration at his house. Marcellus accepted the invitation, but when he found that Priscus was preparing to fulfill religious rites, he asked to be excused on the ground that he was a Christian. This raised an outcry, and the bystanders tried to kill Marcellus there and then by tying him to the tops of two young trees in tension and then letting them fly apart. The governor ordered him to make an act of worship before an image of Saturn. He refused, whereupon he was buried up to his middle in the earth on the banks of the Saone, and died in three days of exposure and starvation. Butler mentions with St. Marcellus, the martyr St. Valerian who is named in the Roman Martyrology on September 15th. He is said to have escaped from prison at the same time as Marcellus, and was beheaded for the Faith at Tournus, near Autun. St. Valerian's feast day is September 15th.

Empress. Saint Helena was an innkeeper's daughter

AddThis Social Bookmarking Sharing Button Widget

Empress. Saint Helena was an innkeeper's daughter born at Drepanum (later Helenopolis) in Asia Minor, around 270. Another story claims she was born in Britain and was the daughter of King Cole. She married the Roman general Constantius Chlorus, but when he became emperor in 292 he divorced her for political reasons. After his death, their son, who was to become the Emperor Constantine, reinstated his mother and showed her great respect. Coins were minted in her honour.

In about 312, when she was over 60, St Helena became a Christian. She was very devout, dressed quietly, and gave generously to the poor and prisoners. She made a lengthy pilgrimage to the Holy Land where she spent large sums for the relief of the poor and sick and founded churches on the sacred sites.

Ambrose, and the 9th century poet Cynewulf, wrote that Saint Helena won renown because she was the mother of the first Christian Emperor and because she is said to have found the True Cross in Jerusalem. Many miracles were attributed to her. St Helena died in 330. Her sarcophagus is in the Vatican Museum.

One hundred and thirty-five monasteries in England are dedicated to her, particularly in the North East. Many places were dedicated to her name, including St Helen's in Lancashire. The Atlantic island of St Helena was named after her, because Spanish sailors discovered it today - her feast day.

Sts. Justa and Rufina,  Roman Catholic Virgins and Martyrs. These martyrs were two Christian women at Seville in Spain who maintained themselves by selling earthenware. Not to concur in idolatrous superstitions, they refused to sell vessels for the use of heathen ceremonies and when the worshipers broke up their stock-in-trade, Justa and Rufina retorted by overthrowing the image of a false goddess. Whereupon the people impeached them for their faith before the governor. The prefect, after they had boldly confessed Christ, commanded them to be stretched on the rack and their sides to be torn with hooks. An idol was placed near the rack with incense, that if they would offer sacrifice they should be released; but their fidelity was not to be shaken. Justa died on the rack; the judge ordered Rufina to be strangled, and their bodies to be burned. Feastday July 19

3rd July - Saint Thomas - Independent Catholic News

3rd July - Saint Thomas - Independent Catholic News

The disciple Thomas is called 'Didymus the Twin' in the New Testament, but throughout the Christian world he is known as 'Doubting Thomas'. He searched for the truth but found it hard to accept or understand.

In St John's Gospel, when Jesus says: "I go to prepare a place for you. And I will come again and I will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way where I am going," Thomas says: "Lord we don't know where you are going. How can we know the way?" Then Jesus replied: "I am the way, the truth and the light."

St Thomas was not with the other apostles when Jesus appeared to them after his death, and refused to believe that he was alive unless he could see the marks of the nails. Eight days later he saw Jesus for himself, touched the wounds and said: "My Lord and my God."

It is believed that St Thomas went to India as a missionary. A Sixth century inscription at a church in Myapore, in Madras is dedicated to him and he is said to be buried there
