St. Teresa of Avila - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online

St. Teresa of Avila - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online

Saint Teresa of Avila
Foundress of the reformed (Discalced) Carmelites. St Teresa was born in 1515 to an aristocratic family in Avila.  As a child she showed precocious piety by playing at hermitages with her younger brother.  The pair once ran away from home, hoping to go to Morocco and die as martyrs.

After her mother's death when she was just 14, Teresa went through a spell of being very interested in boys and clothes.  She was sent to be educated by the Augustinian nuns and soon decided she wanted to become a nun.  Her father at first objected, but later gave his consent and she entered a Carmelite convent at the age of 20.

The convent was a relaxed place, where many visitors came and went and the sisters were often allowed out in the town.  Teresa struggled with her prayer life, abandoned it and then returned once again.  After about 25 years of living the unreformed Carmelite life, she decided she wanted to found a community where the rule could be more strictly observed.  In 1562 she established her new house of St Joseph of Avila with 13 nuns, living an austere life of prayer and work.  The sisters never ate meat.  Teresa made sure she did every job the others did - from cooking and cleaning to spinning and sewing.

With St John of the Cross, she helped reform the Carmelite friars and established 16 more Carmelite convents.  St Teresa became a great teacher on prayer and contemplation.  She wrote countless letters and several books including her autobiography, and the classics.  'The Way of Perfection', written for nuns and  'The Interior Castle'.

St Teresa was know for her cheerfulness and sense of humour. She said:   "God deliver me from sullen saints" .

She was canonised in 1622 and was the first woman saint to be made a doctor of the Church in 1970.

St. Maurice - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online

St. Maurice - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online

Saint Maurice and Companions. The patron of soldiers, the Swiss Guards, weavers and dyers. St Maurice was a black soldier in the 2nd century Roman army. In around 287AD, he served under General Maximian Herculius, in a legion that had been recruited entirely from Christians in Upper Egypt.

They were sent to Gaul to put down a revolt by Bagaudae tribe. When the army reached the River Rhone, the General ordered every soldier to make a sacrifice to the pagan gods before the battle. The Legion refused to a man. Maurice was their primicerius, or principal officer. In a form of Christian mutiny the men withdrew from the army and set up camp at Agaunum, now called Saint Maurice-en-Valaise.

When Maximian could not persuade them to make sacrifices to the gods, he ordered them to be killed. At first he had every tenth man executed. Then the entire legion was put to death. "We have seen our comrades killed," they said. "Rather than sorrow we rejoice in the honour done to them."

Writing in the 5th century, Eucherius of Lyons, says more than 6,600 men died in the massacre. Other historians say a great number of men lost their lives.

St Maurice became very popular throughout Europe and is patron of many places, including Piedmont, Savoy and Sardinia. In art he is usually depicted as a tall black foot soldier. Eight ancient English churches are dedicated to him

St. Cornelius - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online

Saint Cornelius, Pope and Martyr. A Roman Catholic priest, Cornelius was elected Pope to succeed Fabian in an election delayed fourteen months by Decius' persecution of the Christians. One of the main issues of his pontificate was the treatment of Christians who had abandoned their faith during the persecution. He condemned those confessors who were lax in not demanding penance of these Christians. On the other hand, he also denounced the Rigorists, headed by Novatian, a Roman priest, who declared that the Church could not pardon lapsed Christians, and declared himself Pope - the first antipope.Cornelius proclaimed that the Church had the authority and the power to forgive repentant lapsed Christians and could readmit them to the sacraments and the Church after they had performed proper penances.A synod of Western bishops in Rome in October 251 upheld Cornelius, condemned the teachings of Novatian, and excommunicated him and his followers. When persecutions of the Christians started up again in 253 under Emperor Gallus, Cornelius was exiled to Centum Cellae (Civita Vecchia), where he died a martyr. Feastday Sept 16

St. Valerian - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online

St. Valerian, Roman Catholic Priest and Martyr.

The massacre of the martyrs of Lyons with their bishop, St. Pothinus, took place during the persecutions of Marcus Aurelius in the year 177. Marcellus, a priest, we are told, by Divine intervention, managed to escape to Chalon-sur-Saone, where he was given shelter. His host was a pagan, and seeing him offer incense before images of Mars, Mercury, and Minerva, Marcellus remonstrated with and converted him. While journeying toward the North, the priest fell in with the governor Priscus, who asked him to a celebration at his house. Marcellus accepted the invitation, but when he found that Priscus was preparing to fulfill religious rites, he asked to be excused on the ground that he was a Christian. This raised an outcry, and the bystanders tried to kill Marcellus there and then by tying him to the tops of two young trees in tension and then letting them fly apart. The governor ordered him to make an act of worship before an image of Saturn. He refused, whereupon he was buried up to his middle in the earth on the banks of the Saone, and died in three days of exposure and starvation. Butler mentions with St. Marcellus, the martyr St. Valerian who is named in the Roman Martyrology on September 15th. He is said to have escaped from prison at the same time as Marcellus, and was beheaded for the Faith at Tournus, near Autun. St. Valerian's feast day is September 15th.

Bls. John Roche & Margaret Ward, Roman Catholic English Martyrs. They were offered their liberty if they would ask the Queen's pardon and promise to go to church; to which they replied that they had done nothing that could reasonably offend her Majesty, and that it was against their conscience to attend a protestant church. So they were condemned. These martyrs, who suffered with such firm constancy and patience, were forbidden to speak to the people from the scaffold because their persecutors were afraid of the impression they would make; "but the very death of so many saint-like innocent men (whose lives were unimpeachable), and of several young gentlemen, which they endured with so much joy, strongly pleaded for the cause for which they died." Their feast day is August 28. .

St. Otranto Martyrs ~ Antonio Primaldo - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online

t.s Antonio Primaldo and  The Otranto Martyrs, Roman Catholic Priests and Martyrs.  Feastday Aug. 14
Antonio Primaldo was martyred in 1480 by Ottoman invaders after he refused along with approximately 800 others, to convert to Islam.
In 1480, an Ottoman force arrived by sea in the southern tip of the Italian boot, at the town of Otranto. Ontranto at that time was a small, fortified town of about 6,000 inhabitants.

The Ottomans immediately attacked the town, bombarding it indiscriminately. The asked for the towns surrender the next day, which was summarily refused. Thus scorned, the Ottomans resumed their bombardment compelling the civilians to retreat into the small citadel there.

That retreat and the subsequent entry into the town by the Ottoman invaders, initiated a 15-day siege during which the inhabitants remained steadfast.

A final assault was ordered on the citadel by the Ottoman commander, Gedik Ahmed Pasha. That assault broke through the defenses and subsequently all men over the age of 15 were slaughtered. The women and children were enslaved.

A number of people still managed to survive and escape and took refuge in the local cathedral to pray with their elderly archbishop, Stefano Pendinelli. Pasha entered the cathedral and demanded their conversion to Islam. All refused and most were immediately beheaded.

On August 14, about 800 survivors including Antonio Primaldo were bound with ropes and transported to a local hilltop where they were to be executed, their families compelled to watch and even assist in the killings.

Primaldo was the first victim and was beheaded whilst standing. Legend says his body remained standing, and despite efforts to push it over, remained upright until the last victim was killed. This miracle was said to cause the conversion of an Ottoman officer called Bersabei, who became Christian. For this conversion, he was impaled by his own men.

St. Lawrence - Martyr - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online

St. Lawrence - Martyr - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online

Saint Lawrence was one of seven deacons who were in charge of giving help to the poor and the needy. When a persecution broke out, Pope St. Sixtus was condemned to death. As he was led to execution, Lawrence followed him weeping, "Father, where are you going without your deacon?" he said. "I am not leaving you, my son," answered the Pope. "in three days you will follow me." Full of joy, Lawrence gave to the poor the rest of the money he had on hand and even sold expensive vessels to have more to give away.

The Prefect of Rome, a greedy pagan, thought the Church had a great fortune hidden away. So he ordered Lawrence to bring the Church's treasure to him. The Saint said he would, in three days. Then he went through the city and gathered together all the poor and sick people supported by the Church. When he showed them to the Prefect, he said: "This is the Church's treasure!"

In great anger, the Prefect condemned Lawrence to a slow, cruel death. The Saint was tied on top of an iron grill over a slow fire that roasted his flesh little by little, but Lawrence was burning with so much love of God that he almost did not feel the flames. In fact, God gave him so much strength and joy that he even joked. "Turn me over," he said to the judge. "I'm done on this side!" And just before he died, he said, "It's cooked enough now." Then he prayed that the city of Rome might be converted to Jesus and that the Catholic Faith might spread all over the world. After that, he went to receive the martyr's reward. Saint Lawrence's feast day is August 10th.
