His writings were formative in the early development of Christian theology. He was a disciple of Polycarp of Smyrna, who himself was a disciple of the Apostle John the Theologian. Irenaeus is thought to have been a Greek from Smyrna in Asia Minor, now Izmir, Turkey. He was brought up in a Christian family. Irenaeus was one of the first Christian writers to refer to the principle of Apostolic Succession. Irenaeus is remembered as the second bishop of Lyons, although there is no clear evidence that he ever officially assumed the episcopal duties. The first bishop, Pothinus, was martyred around 177 during persecutions under Marcus Aurelius, when Irenaeus was visiting Rome. Irenaeus was martyred in 202, but there is no information about his death. He was buried under the church of Saint John in Lyons, which was later renamed St Ir

Eritrea: Sick forced from beds as government seizes all Catholic-run health services People waiting at clinic Source: ACN Thousands of sick people across Eritrea are being deprived of vital medical care after the government seized three hospitals, two health centres and 16 clinics. Government soldiers forced patients from their beds and out of the clinics, and seized religious houses as they confiscated the 21 health institutes run by the Catholic Church, serving at least 170,000 people every year. Sources close to the Catholic Church told Aid to the Church in Need that - unless the services were quickly resumed - people could die, with some walking up to 16 miles (25km) to access some of the clinics. With the last of the week-long confiscations taking place on Tuesday (18th June), Eritrea's four bishops condemned the action in a letter to Eritrea minister of health Amna Nurhusein. The letter vows to refuse to cooperate with the confiscation programme - which in a

St Erasmus-June 2

Image
St Erasmus Celebrated on June 2nd Popularly known as St Elmo, this early saint was Bishop of Formiae in Italy. When the Christians were being persecuted under Emperor Diocletian according to legend he took refuge on Mt Lebanon, living on food brought to him by birds. He was captured and suffered horrendous tortures before he managed to escape and began boldly preaching again. He was recaptured in Illyricum, tortured again, and finally killed in 303. His symbol is a windlass used to lift a ship's anchor. St Elmo is the patron saint of sailors. St Elmo's Fire - a electrical phenomenon that sometimes appears on ship's mastheads after a storm, is named after him. For centuries the parish church of Faversham in Kent had an altar dedicated to St Erasmus with lights provided by legacies. Several alabastar carvings, and paintings of him by Grunwald, Cranach and Dirk Bouts survive to this day, as does a sculpture of the saint in the chapel of Henry VII in Westminster A
