 SAINTS NOVEMBER 01 St Mary the Slave, Roman Catholic Martyr a nd slave of a Roman patrician named Tertullus. Delivered to the local prefect on charges of being a Christian, despite Tertullus' effort to save her, Mary suffered unspeakable tortures. Spectators demanded her release, and the prefect turned her over to the custody of a soldier. He aided her escape. She died a natural death but is venerated as a martyr because of the intensity of her sufferings. Feastday Nov 1 Bl. Teodor Romza, Roman Catholic priest and bishop, he was tireless in his defence of the rights of the Catholic Church there. On 27 October 1947, the Soviets attempted to kill Bishop Romzha. Heavily wounded, he was taken to the hospital in Mukachiv, where he was subsequently poisoned and died on 1 November 1947.   SAINTS OCTOBER 31 St. Quentin, Roman Catholic Missionary and Martyr. He went to Gaul as a missionary with St. Lucian of Beauvais, and settled at Amiens in Picardy. He was so successful in preaching that he was imprisoned by prefect Rictiovarus, tortured, and then brought to Augusta Veromanduorum, where he was again tortured and then was beheaded. Feastday Oct 31 ST. ALPHONSE RODRIGUEZ, JESUIT St. Arnulf, Roman Catholic Benedictine martyred by the Saracens. Arnulf was a monk at Novalese, in Piedmont, Italy. When the area was overrun by the Saracens, he was put to death. Feastday: October 31 Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg (c. 934 – October 31, 994) was bishop of Regensburg in Bavaria from Christmas 972 until his death. He is regarded as one of the three great German saints of the 10th century, the other two being Saint Ulrich and Saint Conrad of Constance.

  SAINTS OCTOBER 30 Bl. John Slade, 1583 A.D. Martyr of England. He was a native of Manston, Dorchestershire, and was educated at Oxford. John denied King Henry Viii’s supremacy in religious matters and was arrested and tried with Blessed John Bodey . They were hanged, drawn, and quartered at Winchester. He was beatified in 1929. St. Arilda. Virgin, martyr of Gloucestershire, England. She was slain while defending her chastity. St. Arilda is honored by a church on Oldbury on the Hill.   St.  Ethelnoth. Archbishop of Canterbury, England called “the Good,” also called Aethelnoth. He was a monk at Glastonbury until 1020, when he was consecrated archbishop. Ethelnoth won the loyalty of King Canute II, who aided his work. A gifted scholar, he persuaded Canute to assist in the restoration of Chartres Cathedral in France.  St. Talacrian, 6th century. SAINTS OCTOBER 29 Bl. Maria Restituta, Roman Catholic Nun and Martyr . Sr. Mary Restituta was arrested by the Gestapo and accused not only of hanging the crosses but also of having written a poem mocking Hitler.On 29 October 1942 she was sentenced to death by the guillotine.The Nazis offered her freedom if she would abandon the Franciscan sisters, but she refused. When a request for clemency reached the desk of Martin Bormann, a high ranking Nazi official, he replied that her execution would provide “effective intimidation” for others who might want to resist the Nazis. She spent the rest of her days in prison caring for other prisoners. She was beheaded on 30 March 1943. She was 48 years old. Feastday: October 29 ST.  SAINTS OCTOBER 28 St. John Dat, Roman Catholic Priest and Martyr of Vietnam . He was a native of that land, ordained in 1798, and arrested in that same year and imprisoned for three months before being beheaded. St. Joachim Royo, Roman Catholic Priest and Dominican martyr in China . A Spaniard, Joachim was sent to China with Blessed Peter Sanz and was ordained there. SAINTS OCTOBER 27 Sts. Vincent, Sabina, & Christeta, Roman Catholic martyrs who were executed at Avila, Spain, during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian (r. 284-305). Feastday Oct 27 St. Abban of Murnevin , fifth century. Abbot and missionary , called Ewin, Evin, Neville, or Nevin. He is listed as a nephew of St. Kevin and is confused with St. Abban of Magh­Armuidhe. Abban is best known for his association with the monastery of Rosmic­Treoin of New Ross.   St. Odhran , 563 A.D. Also Otteran and Oran, an Irish abbot. After serving as abbot of Meath, he journeyed to Scotland with St. Columba to promote the faith and died at Lona.   SAINTS OCTOBER 26 ST. DEMETRIUS, MARTYR St. Alfred the Great, 899 A.D. King of Wessex, scholar, and renowned Christian monarch. Alfred was born in 849, the fifth son of the Wessex king. During a journey to Rome in 853, he was accepted as a godson by Pope Leo IV. He was a great scholar, translating classics for his people, and early on seemed destined for a career in the Church. Instead, he became king and was forced to spend most of his reign in conflict with the Danes who were then threatening England. His work as a patron of the arts, literature, and especially the Church made him a beloved figure in England.   St. Cuthbert, 758 A.D. Benedictine archbishop of Canterbury . He was a monk at Lyminge, in Kent, England, until about 736, when he was appointed the bishop of Hereford. About 740, he became the archbishop of Canterbury.   SAINTS OCTOBER 25 STS. CRISPIN AND CRISPINIAN,MARTYRS STS. CHRYSANTHUS AND DARIA, MARTYRS ON THE VIA SALARIA NUOVA St. John Houghton, Roman Catholic Carthusian Monk and Protomartyr of the English Reformation . He refused to swear to the Oath of Supremacy, the first man to make this refusal. Dragged through the streets, he was executed at Tyburn with four companions by being hanged, drawn, and quartered. SAINTS OCTOBER 24 Martyrs of Nagran, a large group of Christian martyrs , possibly as many as 340, who suffered at Nagran, in southwestern Arabia. Abdullah ibn Kaab, also called Aretas, was the leader of the martyrs and the chief of the Beni Harith. He and his companions were slain by Dhu Nowas, or Dunaan, a Jew who commanded heathen Jews and Arabs. A woman and her small children were among the victims. The martyrdom is recorded in the Koran. Feastday October 24 St. Anthony Mary Claret, Roman Catholic Priest. Archbishop and missionary, and was confessor of Isabella II of Spain.   SAINTS OCTOBER 23 St. John of Capistrano, Roman Catholic Priest and Martyr. In 1456 at age 70 he led a crusade against the invading Ottoman Empire at the siege of Belgrade with the Hungarian military commander John Hunyadi. St. John, at the age of seventy, was commissioned by Pope Callistus III to preach and lead a crusade against the invading Turks. Marching at the head of seventy thousand Christians, he gained victory in the great battle of Belgrade against the Turks in 1456. Three months later he died at Illok, Hungary. His feast day is October 23. He is the patron of jurists. St. Paul Tong Buong, Roman Catholic Vietnamese martyr . A native of Vietnam, he served in the bodyguard of the king. SAINTS OCTOBER 22 St. Alodia, Roman Catholic Martyr and Confesso r. Martyr and confessor, the daughter of a Muslim father and a Christian mother in Huesca, Spain. Alodia and her sister, Nunilo, were caught up in the persecutions conducted by Abdal-Rabman II, the ruler of Cordoba. Alodia and Nunilo dedicated themselves to Christ, despite their father's disapproval, and were arrested. When they refused to deny Christ, they were placed in a brothel and later beheaded.Oct 22 St. Bertharius, Roman Catholic Monk and Martyr . In 883, the monastery was again attacked by Muslims, and Bertharius was killed along with some other monks at the altar of St. Martin on October 22 of that year in the church of Saint Salvator at the foot of the hill.  SAINTS OCTOBER 21 Bl. Giuseppe "Pino" Puglis, Roman Catholic Priest . September 15, 1993) was a Roman Catholic priest in the rough Palermo neighbourhood of Brancaccio. He openly challenged the Mafia who controlled the neighbourhood, and was killed by them on his 56th birthday. His life story has been retold in a book, Pino Puglisi, il prete che fece tremare la mafia con un sorriso (2013), and portrayed in a film, In the Sunlight (2005). St. Tuda , 664 A.D. Irish monk and bishop. He succeeded St. Colman as bishop of Lindisfarne, and he was a supporter of the Roman Rite versus the Celtic Church in England. He died after only one year in his see from an outbreak of plague. No other facts are available about him, owing to the destruction of so many records in the sacking of Lindisfarne by the Danes in the ninth century. SAINTS OCTOBER 20 St. Caprasius of Agen, Roman Catholic Priest and Martyr. The death of St. Faith prompted Caprasius to declare openly his Christianity. He was joined by his mother, Alberta, his brothers Primus and Felician, and by companions. They were put to death when they refused to deny the faith.Oct 20 Bl.   SAINTS OCTOBER 19  St. Laura, Roman Catholic and Martyr. She was martyred by Muslims who took her captive and scalded her to death by placing her in a vat of boiling lead. She is one of the Martyrs of Córdoba. Feast Day Oct. 19. St. Theofrid, Roman Catholic Priest and Martyr . He was killed by Muslim raiders who had crossed into southern France. Feastday October 19 St. Philip Howard, 1595 A.D. One of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales . Philip was the earl of Arundel and Surrey and, although a Catholic, led a religiously apathetic life until his personal conversion, after which he was a zealous Catholic in the midst of Elizabethan England. Arrested by authorities, he was placed in the Tower of London in 1585 and condemned to death in 1589. The sentence was never carried out, and Philip languished in the Tower until his death at the age of thirty eight. En route to Rome, where according to Christian tradition he met his martyrdom by being fed to wild beasts. Feast day is October 17th. Bls. SAINTS OCTOBER 16  St. Eliphius, 362 A.D. Irish or Scottish martyr, also called Eloff. He was martyred in Toul, France. His relics were enshrined in Cologne, Germany, in the tenth century.  St. Kiara, 680 A.D. Irish virgin, a disciple of St. Fintan Munnu Kiara, who is also listed as Chier, lived near Nenagh, in Tipperary, Ireland. St. Gerard Majella, Roman Catholic lay brother of the Congregation of the Redeemer . This great saint is invoked as a patron of expectant mothers as a result of a miracle effected through his prayers for a woman in labor. Feast day is October 16th. ST. Feastday Oct 15 St. Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus, Doctor of The Church, Roman Catholic Carmelite nun, writer of the Counter Reformation, and theologian of contemplative life through mental prayer.  SAINTS OCTOBER 14 Pope Callixtus I Roman Catholic Priest and Pope, also called Callistus I, was the bishop of Rome from c. 218 to his death in 223. He lived during the reigns of the Roman Emperors Elagabalus and Alexander Severus. He was martyred for his Christian faith. Feastday Oct 14 St. Burchard, 754 A.D. Disciple of St. Boniface and a missionary to Germany. Burchard was a priest of Wessex, England, and Benedictine. In 732, he went to Germany, serving under St. Boniface who consecrated him the first bishop of Würzburg. In 749, Burchard was sent by the Frankish King Pep in the Short to Rome, where he received Pope St. Zachary's approval of Pepsin’s accession to the Frankish throne. After founding the abbey of St. Andrew's, Burchard resigned from his see around 753. He retired to Hamburg, Germany, and the monastic life, dying there on February 2.   St. Manakus. SAINTS OCTOBER 13 Bl. Alexandrina Maria da Costa, Roman Catholic Laywoman .  On Holy Saturday of 1918, Alexandrina Maria da Costa, a fourteen-year-old native of Balasar, Portugal, was sewing when three men broke into her home, threatening to violate her chastity. Resolute to preserve her purity, she fled by jumping out a window. The thirteen-foot plunge to the ground crippled her for life. Feast day is October 13th. St. Edward the Confessor, Roman Catholic King of England . He built St. Peter's Abbey at Westminster, the site of the present Abbey, where he is buried.  SAINTS OCTOBER 12  St. Wilfrid. Born in Northumberland in 634, St. Wilfrid was educated at Lindesfarne and then spent some time in Lyons and Rome. Returning to England, he was elected abbot of Ripon in 658 and introduced the Roman rules and practices in opposition to the Celtic ways of northern England. In 664, he was the architect of the definitive victory of the Roman party at the Conference of Whitby. He was appointed Bishop of York and after some difficulty finally took possession of his See in 669. He labored zealously and founded many monasteries of the Benedictine Order, but he was obliged to appeal to Rome in order to prevent the subdivision of his diocese by St. Theodore, Archbishop of Canterbury. While waiting for the case to be decided, he was forced to go into exile, and worked hard and long to evangelize the heathen south Saxons until his recall in 686. In 691, he had to retire again to the midlands until Rome once again vindicated him. In 703, he resigned his post and r

  Saint of the day October 11 St. Ethelburga . Benedictine abbess, daughter of the king of the East Angles and sister of Sts. Eronwald, Etheldreda, Sexburga, and Withburga. St. Erconwald founded a convent for her at Barking, in Essex, England. She was trained as an abbess by St. Hildelid, who came from France to assist her.   St. John of Bridlington , 1379 A.D. Augustinian prior and patron of women who face difficult labors. He was born John Thwing in Bridlington, Yorkshire, England, in 1319, and became a student at Oxford. Joining the Augustinians at Bridlington, he served as prior for seventeen years until his death. He was canonized in 1401.   St. Kenneth . Kenneth is a derivative of Canice. All we know about Canice is from unreliable legend, according to which he was born at Glengiven, Ireland. He became a monk under St. Cadoc at Llancarfan, Wales, and was ordained there.   Saint of the day October 10 St. Daniel, Roman Catholic Franciscan martyr of Morocco , with Samuel, Angelus, Domnus, Leo, Nicholas, and Hugolinus. Daniel was a Franciscan provincial in Calabria, Italy. He and the other friars went on a mission to Morocco to preach to the Muslims. They were arrested in Ceuta, North Africa, and termed madmen. When they refused to convert to Islam, they were beheaded. Feastday: October 10 Sts. Eulampius and Eulampia, Roman Catholic Martyr s. Eulampius was arrested by the Roman authorities during an attempt to buy supplies for Christians who were hiding in caves on the outskirts of Nicomedia. After Eulampius was whipped, his sister Eulampia was arrested after she identified herself by emerging from a crowd to embrace and comfort him. Eulampius and Eulampia were executed the next day.According to Christian tradition, two hundred soldiers, moved by the courage of the two siblings, converted to Christianity and were themselves martyred.   Saint of the day October 09 Sts. Denis, Rusticus, and Eleutherius . After a long imprisonment and several aborted executions, the three martyrs were beheaded with a sword and their bodies were thrown into the river. Denis' body was retrieved from the Seine by his converts and buried. The chapel that was built over his tomb grew into the abbey of Saint-Denis. St. Anicet Adolfo, Roman Catholic Priest and Spanish Martyr . joined the Congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, and was one of the martyrs of Turon, who were slain during a violent uprising that preceded the Spanish Civil War.The Martyrs of Turon was canonized in 1999. St. John Leonardi, Roman Catholic Priest. He was venerated for his miracles and religious fervor and is considered one of the founders of the College for the Propagation of the Faith.  Saint of the day October 08 Saint Pelagia is an Roman Catholic Antiochene saint, a virgin of fifteen years, who chose death by a leap from the housetop rather than dishonour from soldiers during the Diocletianic Persecution. Feastday October 8 St. Keyne . Keyna or Cain was one of the twenty four children of King Brychan of Brecknock, Wales. She refused several suitors' offers of marriage and became a hermitess on the banks of the Severn River in Somersetshire, England. After living there for several years, during which she traveled widely, she was persuaded by her nephew, St. Cadoc, to return to Wales, though exactly where she spent her last days is not known. During her travels, she founded numerous churches in South Wales, Cornwall, and perhaps Somerset.    St. Ywi, 690 A.D. Benedictine monk and hermit at Lindisfarne Abbey, England. In Brittany, France, he is called St Cenneur. Several churches in Wales honor him.   St. Osyth, 700 A.D. Martyred nun , also called Osith and Sytha. Known mainly through legends, she was supposedly the daughter of a chieftain of the Mercians in England and Wilburga, daughter of the powerful pagan king Penda of Mercia. Raised in a convent, Osyth desired to become a nun but was married against her will to King Sighere of Essex, by whom she had a son. Eventually, she won his permission to enter a convent, and she established a monastery on land at Chich, Essex, donated by Sighere, where she served as an abbess. She was reputedly slain by Danish raiders and is thus depicted in art as carrying her own head. She was then tortured to death for her Christianity on a red-hot brazier. Also executed with her was St. Alberta (March 11th); when some of the spectators objected, Dacian had them beheaded. Saint of the day October 05 Bl. William Hartley, 1588 A.D. Martyr of England . Born at WiIne, Derbyshire, he studied at Oxford and was an Anglican minister before his conversion to Catholicism. Going to Reims, France, he received ordination in 1580 and went back to the English mission to aid St. Edmund Campion. He was arrested in 1582 and deported from England. He returned and was captured again at Holborn. William was hanged at Shoreditch and beatified in 1929 Bl. Robert Sutton, 1588 A.D. English martyr. Born at Kegwell, Leicestershire, he became an Anglican priest, studying at Oxford. In 1575, he converted and went to Douai, France. He returned to England and was arrested in London and hanged at Clerkenwell. . St. Anna Schaeffer, Roman Catholic Laywoman. She was paralyzed during an industrial accident in 1901. He was seized by the Muslims for preaching against Muhammad and condemned to death. His captors tortured, blinded, crucified, and finally beheaded him.
