 SAINTS NOVEMBER 01 St. Cadfan, 6th century. Missionary to Wales venerated in Owynedd and Bardsey Island as a companion of Towyn. He was a native of Brittany, France, and founded monasteries in Wales.   St Mary the Slave, Roman Catholic Martyr and slave of a Roman patrician named Tertullus. Delivered to the local prefect on charges of being a Christian, despite Tertullus' effort to save her, Mary suffered unspeakable tortures. Spectators demanded her release, and the prefect turned her over to the custody of a soldier. He aided her escape. She died a natural death but is venerated as a martyr because of the intensity of her sufferings. Feastday Nov 1 Bl. Teodor Romza, Roman Catholic priest and bishop, he was tireless in his defence of the rights of the Catholic Church there. On 27 October 1947, the Soviets attempted to kill Bishop Romzha.  SAINTS OCTOBER 31 St. Arnulf, Roman Catholic Benedictine martyred by the Saracens.Arnulf was a monk at Novalese, in Piedmont, Italy. When the area was overrun by the Saracens, he was put to death. Feastday: October 31 Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg (c. 934 – October 31, 994) was bishop of Regensburg in Bavaria from Christmas 972 until his death. He is regarded as one of the three great German saints of the 10th century, the other two being Saint Ulrich and Saint Conrad of Constance. St. Quentin, Roman Catholic Missionary and Martyr. He went to Gaul as a missionary with St. Lucian of Beauvais, and settled at Amiens in Picardy. He was so successful in preaching that he was imprisoned by prefect Rictiovarus, tortured, and then brought to Augusta Veromanduorum, where he was again tortured and then was beheaded. SAINTS OCTOBER 30 St. Arilda. Virgin, martyr of Gloucestershire, England. She was slain while defending her chastity. St. Arilda is honored by a church on Oldbury on the Hill.   St. Talacrian, 6th century. Bishop of Scotland, also cal led Tarkin. He was probably of Pictish descent, serving as a bishop in Caledonia (Scotland). His name was listed in the Aberdeen Breviary.   St.  Ethelnoth. Archbishop of Canterbury, England called “the Good,” also called Aethelnoth. He was a monk at Glastonbury until 1020, when he was consecrated archbishop. Ethelnoth won the loyalty of King Canute II, who aided his work. A gifted scholar, he persuaded Canute to assist in the restoration of Chartres Cathedral in France.  Bl. John Slade, 1583 A.D. Martyr of England. He was a native of Manston, Dorchestershire, and was educated at Oxford. John denied King Henry Viii’s supremacy in religious matters and was arrested and tried with Blessed John Bodey. They were hanged, drawn, and quartered at Winchester. He

 SAINTS OCTOBER 29 St. Colman of Kilmacduagh, 623 A.D.  Abbot­bishop, son of the Irish chieftain, Duac. He lived as a hermit at Arranmore and Burren, in County Clare, Ireland. Made a bishop against he will, he founded a monastery at Kilmacduagh, on land given by King Guaire of Connaught.    The Douai Martyrs, More than 160 priests trained in the English College of Douai, France, returned to England and Wales and faced arrest, torture, and execution by English authorities. A large group, more than eighty­were beatified in 1929, and English dioceses celebrate the feasts of these martyrs.    St. Elfleda, 1000 A.D.  Benedictine abbess, the daughter of Earl Ethelwold, who founded her abbey in Ramsey, England.   St. Kennera , 4th century.  SAINTS OCTOBER 28 St. Eadsin, 1050 A.D. Archbishop of Canterbury, England, who crowned King St. Edward the Confessor. St. Simon the Zealot, Roman Catholic Martyr. Simon was surnamed the Zealot for his rigid adherence to the Jewish law and to the Canaanite law. He was one of the original followers of Christ. Western tradition is that he preached in Egypt and then went to Persia with St. Jude, where both suffered martyrdom. St. Jude Thaddaeus, Apostle and Martyr. St. Jude was one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus. St. John Dat, Roman Catholic Priest and Martyr of Vietnam. He was a native of that land, ordained in 1798, and arrested in that same year and imprisoned for three months before being beheaded. St. Joachim Royo, Roman Catholic Priest and Dominican martyr in China. A Spaniard, Joachim was sent to China with Blessed Peter Sanz and was ordained there. He was strangled to death in a prison after horrible atrocities.

 SAINTS OCTOBER 27 St. Abban of Murnevin, fifth century. Abbot and missionary, called Ewin, Evin, Neville, or Nevin. He is listed as a nephew of St. Kevin and is confused with St. Abban of Magh­Armuidhe. Abban is best known for his association with the monastery of Rosmic­Treoin of New Ross.   St. Odhran, 563 A.D. Also Otteran and Oran, an Irish abbot. After serving as abbot of Meath, he journeyed to Scotland with St. Columba to promote the faith and died at Lona. Odhran was the first Irish monk to die at Lona. He may have founded Latteragh Abbey in Tipperary He is considered the principal patron saint of Waterford, Ireland. Sts.  SAINTS OCTOBER 26 St. Bean. On December 16, there is named in the Roman Martyrology and in certain Irish calendars a Saint Bean in Ireland, who had been confused with the St. Bean whose feast is still observed in the Scottish diocese of Aberdeen, but on October 26, as founder of the bishopric of Mortlach in Banff which was the forerunner of that of Aberdeen. Nothing else is known about him. The fourteenth century chronicler Fordun, states that he was made bishop by Pope Benedict VIII, at the request of Malcolm Canmore, who is said to have founded an Episcopal monastery at Mortlach. If true, this would be between 1012 and 1024; but the See of Mortlach is generally said to date from 1063. SAINTS OCTOBER 25 St. Marnock. Irish bishop, a disciple of St. Columba. He resided on Jona, Scotland, and is also called Marnan, Marnanus, or Marnoc. He died at Annandale and is revered on the Scottish border. His name was given to Kilmarnock, Scotland. St. John Houghton, Roman Catholic Carthusian Monk and Protomartyr of the English Reformation. He refused to swear to the Oath of Supremacy, the first man to make this refusal. Dragged through the streets, he was executed at Tyburn with four companions by being hanged, drawn, and quartered.  SAINTS OCTOBER 23 Bl. Thomas Thwing, 1680 A.D. English martyr. Born at Heworth, Yorkshire, England, he studied at Douai, France, where he was ordained in 1665. Returning home, he labored for fifteen years in the Yorkshire area as chaplain for his cousin, Sir Miles Stapeton, and as a school chaplain. Arrested in 1680 for supposed complicity in the Titus Oates Plot with his uncle, Sir Thomas Gascoigne, he was condemned and hanged, drawn, and quartered at York.   St. Clether, 520 A.D. Welsh saint also called Cleer, Clydog, Scledog, Citanus, or Cleodius. He was a descendant of a local king in Wales. Clether left Wales and went to Cornwall, England.  SAINTS OCTOBER 22 St. Donatus of Fiesole, 874 A.D. An Irishman who became bishop of Fiesole, Italy traveling through that city while returning from a pilgrimage to Rome in 829, Donatus entered the cathedral. Candles caught light and bells rang, prompting the people to elect him bishop. He was a noted scholar and became advisor to Lothair I and his son, Louis II. ST. JOHN PAUL II, POPE ST. MARK, BISHOP OF JERUSALEM St. Alodia, Roman Catholic Martyr and Confessor. Martyr and confessor, the daughter of a Muslim father and a Christian mother in Huesca, Spain. Alodia and her sister, Nunilo, were caught up in the persecutions conducted by Abdal-Rabman II, the ruler of Cordoba. Alodia and Nunilo dedicated themselves to Christ, despite their father's disapproval, and were arrested.  SAINTS OCTOBER 21 St. Tuda, 664 A.D. Irish monk and bishop. He succeeded St. Colman as bishop of Lindisfarne, and he was a supporter of the Roman Rite versus the Celtic Church in England. He died after only one year in his see from an outbreak of plague. No other facts are available about him, owing to the destruction of so many records in the sacking of Lindisfarne by the Danes in the ninth century. Bl. Giuseppe "Pino" Puglis, Roman Catholic Priest. September 15, 1993) was a Roman Catholic priest in the rough Palermo neighbourhood of Brancaccio. He openly challenged the Mafia who controlled the neighbourhood, and was killed by them on his 56th birthday.  SAINTS OCTOBER 20 St. Acca, 742 A.D.  Bishop and scholar, a companion of early English saints and missionaries. Acca was born in Northumbria, England, and was educated in the company of St. Bosa, a Benedictine apostle of great courage. He also met St. Wilfrid, who appointed him the abbot of St. Andrew's Monastery in Hexham, England. Acca joined St. Wilfrid as early as 678 and accompanied him to Rome in 692. When Wilfred died in 709, Acca succeeded him as the bishop of Hexham. He spent his monastic and Episcopal years erecting parish churches in the area. He also introduced Christian arts and promoted learning. Acca brought a famous cantor; a man named Maban, to Hexham, and with him introduced the Roman Chants. St. Bede dedicated several of his works to Acca, who also promoted other Christian writers. For reasons undocumented, Acca was driven out of Hexham in 732. He retired to a hermitage in Withern, in Galloway. Just before his death in 742 he returned to Hexham and was unanimous

 SAINTS OCTOBER 19  St. Eadnot, 1016 A.D. Bishop of Dorchester, England, who was a champion of St. Oswald of York. He is listed as a martyr in some records, having been slain in an invasion by the Danes.    St. Frideswide, 735 A.D. Benedictine hermitess and nun, the daughter of Prince Didan of the Upper Thames region of England. She is sometimes called Fredeswinda. When Prince Algar of a neighboring kingdom asked for her hand in marriage, Frideswide fled to Thomwry Wood in Birnsey, where she became a hermitess. She founded the St. Mary’s Convent in Oxford and is patroness of the University of that City. Her relics are extant.  SAINTS OCTOBER 18   St. Gwen, 5th century. Widowed martyr sometimes called Blanche, Wenn, or Candida. She was the daughter of a Chieftain, Brychan or Brecknock. Saxon pagans martyred Gwen at Talgrarth.    St. Keyna, 5th century. Welsh virgin, also called Keyne or Ceinwen. She is possibly one of the twentyfour children of the chieftain Brychan of Brecknock, Wales. Keyna supposedly became a hermitess on the banks of the Severn River in Somerset, England St. Cadoc, her nephew, convinced her to return to Wales. She founded churches in southern Wales and in Cornwall, England, and possibly in Somerset.    St. Monon, 645 A.D. Scottish pilgrim who moved to Ardennes, France, to become a hermit in that area. Monon was murdered at Nassogne, in Luxembourg, by a group of unrepentant sinners. He is best known for bringing the relics of St. Andrew to Scotland from Greece.   St. Richard Gwyn, 1584 A.D. One of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. Also called Richard White, he was born in Montgomeryshire, Wales, in 1547, and studied at Cambridge University, England. Converted from Protestantism, he returned to Wales in 1562, married, had six children, and opened a school. Arrested in 1579, he spent four years in prison before his execution by being hanged, drawn, and quartered

Feastday Oct 15 St. Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus, Doctor of The Church, Roman Catholic Carmelite nun, writer of the Counter Reformation, and theologian of contemplative life through mental prayer. She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered to be a founder of the Discalced Carmelites along with John of the Cross.

 SAINTS OCTOBER 14 St. Burchard, 754 A.D. Disciple of St. Boniface and a missionary to Germany. Burchard was a priest of Wessex, England, and Benedictine. In 732, he went to Germany, serving under St. Boniface who consecrated him the first bishop of Würzburg. In 749, Burchard was sent by the Frankish King Pep in the Short to Rome, where he received Pope St. Zachary's approval of Pepsin’s accession to the Frankish throne. After founding the abbey of St. Andrew's, Burchard resigned from his see around 753. He retired to Hamburg, Germany, and the monastic life, dying there on February 2.   St. Manakus. Welsh abbot of Holyhead, Wales, also called Manaccus. He was a co worker of St. Cybi. Manakus died in Cornwall, England. Bl. Marie Poussepin, Roman Catholic Nun.  SAINTS OCTOBER 13 St. THEOPHILUS, BISHOP OF ANTIOCH St. Edward the Confessor, Roman Catholic King of England. He built St. Peter's Abbey at Westminster, the site of the present Abbey, where he is buried. His piety gained him the surname "the Confessor". Feastday Oct. 13 Bl. Alexandrina Maria da Costa, Roman Catholic Laywoman.  On Holy Saturday of 1918, Alexandrina Maria da Costa, a fourteen-year-old native of Balasar, Portugal, was sewing when three men broke into her home, threatening to violate her chastity. Resolute to preserve her purity, she fled by jumping out a window. The thirteen-foot plunge to the ground crippled her for life. Feast day is October 13th.

 SAINTS OCTOBER 12  St. Wilfrid. Born in Northumberland in 634, St. Wilfrid was educated at Lindesfarne and then spent some time in Lyons and Rome. Returning to England, he was elected abbot of Ripon in 658 and introduced the Roman rules and practices in opposition to the Celtic ways of northern England. In 664, he was the architect of the definitive victory of the Roman party at the Conference of Whitby. He was appointed Bishop of York and after some difficulty finally took possession of his See in 669. He labored zealously and founded many monasteries of the Benedictine Order, but he was obliged to appeal to Rome in order to prevent the subdivision of his diocese by St. Theodore, Archbishop of Canterbury. While waiting for the case to be decided, he was forced to go into exile, and worked hard and long to evangelize the heathen south Saxons until his recall in 686. In 691, he had to retire again to the midlands until Rome once again vindicated him. In 703, he resigned his post and re

 SAINTS OCTOBER 11  St. Kenneth. Kenneth is a derivative of Canice. All we know about Canice is from unreliable legend, according to which he was born at Glengiven, Ireland. He became a monk under St. Cadoc at Llancarfan, Wales, and was ordained there. After a trip to Rome, he studied under St. Finnian at Clonard, Ireland, accompanied Ss. Kieran, Columba, and Comgall to St. Mobhi at Glasnevin. He preached for a time in Ireland, and then went to Scotland. A close friend of Columba's whom he accompanied on a visit to King Brude of the Picts; he was a most successful missionary. He built a monastery at Aghaboe, Ireland, and probably one at Kilkenny. He is also known as Kenneth and Cainnech.    Bl. Francis Xavier Seelos. Francis Xavier Seelos was born in Fussen, Germany, in 1819. Expressing his desire for the priesthood since an early age, he entered the diocesan seminary of Augsburg after completing his studies in philosophy. It is believed he died on the Isle of Man.   St. Paulinus of York, 584644 A.D. Missionary and bishop of York. A Roman monk, in 60 he was named by Pope St. Gregory I the Great to accompany Sts. Justus and Mellitus on their mission to England to advance the cause of evangelization undertaken by St. Augustine of Canterbury Paulinus labored for some twenty four years in Kent and, in 625, was ordained bishop of Kent. He was also responsible for bringing Christianity to Northumbria, baptizing the pagan king Edwin of Northumbria on Easter 627, and then converting thousands of other Northumbrians. Following the defeat and death of Edwin by pagan Mercians at the Battle of Hatfield in 633, Paulinus was driven from his see, and he returned to Kent with Edwin’s widow Ethelburga, her two children, and Edwin’s grand

 Saints Oct 09 St. Anicet Adolfo, Roman Catholic Priest and Spanish Martyr. joined the Congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, and was one of the martyrs of Turon, who were slain during a violent uprising that preceded the Spanish Civil War.The Martyrs of Turon was canonized in 1999. St. John Leonardi, Roman Catholic Priest. He was venerated for his miracles and religious fervor and is considered one of the founders of the College for the Propagation of the Faith. His feast day is October 9th. Sts. Denis, Rusticus, and Eleutherius. After a long imprisonment and several aborted executions, the three martyrs were beheaded with a sword and their bodies were thrown into the river. Denis' body was retrieved from the Seine by his converts and buried. The chapel that was built over his tomb grew into the abbey of Saint-Denis.  Saints Oct 08 St. Keyne. Keyna or Cain was one of the twentyfour children of King Brychan of Brecknock, Wales. She refused several suitors' offers of marriage and became a hermitess on the banks of the Severn River in Somersetshire, England. After living there for several years, during which she traveled widely, she was persuaded by her nephew, St. Cadoc, to return to Wales, though exactly where she spent her last days is not known. During her travels, she founded numerous churches in South Wales, Cornwall, and perhaps Somerset.    St. Ywi, 690 A.D. Benedictine monk and hermit at Lindisfarne Abbey, England. He was ordained a deacon by St. Cuthbert. When Ywi died as a hermit, his relics were enshrined at Wilton, near Salisbury.   St. Triduna, 4th century. A virgin who, according to tradition, assisted St. Regulus in his mission to Scotland during the fourth century. She is also listed as Trallen and Tredwall. Her shrine at Restalrig was long venerated until its destruction in 1560

 Saints Oct 07 St. Canog, 492 A.D.  Martyr and eldest son of the local king of Brecknock in Wales. He was slain by barbarians at MerthyrCynog. In Brittany, France, he is called St Cenneur. Several churches in Wales honor him.   St. Dubtach, 513 A.D. The Archbishop of Armagh, Ireland, from 497 until his death.    St. Helanus, 6th century. Irish hermit who went to France with six brothers and three sisters. They settled in Reims, where Helanus became a priest.    St. Osyth, 700 A.D. Martyred nun, also called Osith and Sytha. Known mainly through legends, she was supposedly the daughter of a chieftain of the Mercians in England and Wilburga, daughter of the powerful pagan king Penda of Mercia. Raised in a convent, Osyth desired to become a nun but was married against her will to King Sighere of Essex, by whom she had a son. Eventually, she won his permission to enter a convent, and she established a monastery on land at Chich, Essex, donated by Sighere, where she served as an abbess. She

Irish abbot called “the White.” The abbot of Iona, Scotland, he wrote a biography of St. Columba. Bl. Adalbero, Roman Catholic Priest. A bishop and defender of papal authority who endured trials for his loyalty. Adalbero was the son of an Austrian count of Lambach and studied in Paris. He was named the bishop of Wurzberg, Germany, but was forced into exile after defending Pope Gregory VII against King Henry IV. St. Faith, Roman Catholic Martyr. SAINTS OCTOBER 2 St. Thomas of Hereford, 1282 A.D. Bishop of Hereford, also called Thomas Cantilupe. Born at Buckinghamshire, England, circa 1218, he studied at Oxford, Paris, and Orleans. Returning to England, he became chancellor of Oxford University in 1261, using his influence to aid the barons in their struggle against King Henry III (r. 12161272). In 1265, after the defeat of Henry's forces at the battle of Lewes, Thomas was named chancellor of England, although he was soon compelled to retire to Paris after the barons lost their grip on power. Returning to Oxford, he served once more as chancellor of the university in 1273. Two years later he was appointed bishop of Hereford, acquiring a wide reputation for sanctity and charity and serving as one of the most capable counselors of King Edward I (r. 12721307).
